Zabljak is located in the northwest of Montenegro, in the heart of the Durmitor National Park. With its 1456 meters above sea level, the city is the highest urban settlement in Southeastern Europe. It is located at the foot of Durmitor and surrounded by 23 mountain peaks over 2200 meters, with 18 glacial lakes and the canyons of the Tara, Susica and Komarnica rivers. Tara river canyon is the deepest canyon in Europe.

The highest peak of Durmitor is Bobot's hip, 2523 meters above sea level. Outside of the winter season, Durmitor is covered with over 1,500 types of various plants - 150 types of medicinal plants, over 40 types of edible mushrooms, as well as some types of tertiary flora from the Ice Age.

The infrastructure includes a bus station, bakeries, internet cafes, 13 hotels, restaurants, a large number of cafes, shops, tourist agencies, tourist apartments, a sports hall, a modern waste recycling center, a football stadium and two ski centers.

The rich flora and fauna of Durmitor attract many lovers of untouched nature, which is why this mountain was declared a national park in 1952. Durmitor National Park covers an area of 39,000 ha.

The splendor of Durmitor's natural beauty has not gone unnoticed even at the world level. By the decision of the International Committee for World Cultural and Natural Heritage, in Paris in 1980, the Durmitor National Park was included in its list, while the Tara River and its canyon valley (area 182,899 ha) were included in the UNESCO program "Man and the Biosphere" in 1997 world ecological reserves of the biosphere.

Durmitor is on the list of IBA and IPA areas (areas that are important for birds - Important Bird Areas - IBA, and Areas that are important for plants - Important Plant Areas - IPA

In 2016, the necropolises with stecci were included in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage.
